Carbon tax ignited by Suzuki PDF Print
North America - Canada

During the Canadian CTV's interview with environmentalist David Suzuki sparked debate about carbon tax.

According to Suzuki carbon tax is the new way to go weather we like it or not.   This will be a major agenda during the next election.   However, critiques of the plan tell that it goes hand in hand with the interest of big pollutants'and corporations, impose extra tax on the general population, and does not represent those who do not live in large cities and have no obtion but to drive everywhere.

However, the question still remain: Is taxing the solution of our problems?   They are taxing everything what we like, taxing what we don't like, taxing what we would like, taxing bacause of someone did something or did nothing, taxing because of our grand fathers, taxing for our kids, etc.

Nuclear Energy - No Solution to Climate Change

The nuclear industry is in near-terminal decline world-wide, following its failure to establish itself as a clean, cheap, safe or reliable energy source. The on-going crisis in nuclear waste management, in safety and in economic costs have severely undermined the industry?s credibility. It is currently desperate to find a valid rationale and justification for renewed state support and funding. It is promoting the claim that as nuclear power stations do not emit carbon dioxide, the major greenhouse gas, switching from fossil fuels to nuclear power is the only way to cut Carbon Dioxide (CO2) without radically changing consumption patterns. However, even the most perfunctory examination of the issue shows that nuclear power has no role whatever in tackling global climate change. In fact quite the opposite is true; any resources expended on attempting to advance nuclear power as a viable solution would inevitably detract from genuine measures to reduce the threat of global warming.

Safe Nuclear Power and Green Hydrogen Fuel

Nuclear

Nuclear power is being shunned. It’s not surprising, after the serious accident at Chernobyl in 1986 that made the Russian city’s name synonymous with disaster. The potential exists for more of the same and many countries have given up on nuclear power altogether.
But in other countries, they’ve been able to make it work. In France, for instance, about 75 percent of electricity is generated from nuclear power. Worldwide, it provides 17% of our energy. The US has not brought a new plant online since 1996 yet still generates 788.6 billion kilowatt-hours (KWh) yearly – almost 20% of the US total – accident free.

Nuclear power is like a handgun. It’s the people handling it who are dangerous. But there is one big difference: with a handgun, you shoot a few people at most. A reactor accident could wipe several hundred square miles – permanently.

But all technologies start out crawling before they can walk or even run. The nuclear scientists have been working on the safety problems and already may have solved them.

Time Magazin Cover Created Controversy

The Battle of Iwo Jima was a fierce fight for over a month during the Second World War between the US and Japan to capture the airfield on this strategically located island.   The photo of raising the US flag became an iconic image.    The veterans feel insulted by bringing paralells between the heroic fight of the battle and the fight against global warming.

Donald Mates, an Iwo Jima veteran, told "It's an absolute disgrace, whoever did it is going to hell. That's a mortal sin. God forbid he runs into a Marine that was an Iwo Jima survivor."

Personally, I just hope that he is rigth, the one will be punished, and we won't get broiled on the surface together.

Beware of Paraben Preservatives in Body Care Products

Cosmetic chemicals found in breast tumours
12 January 2004
New Scientist.com news service

Preservative chemicals found in samples of breast tumours probably came from
underarm deodorants, UK scientists have claimed.

Their analysis of 20 breast tumours found high concentrations of
para-hydroxybenzoic acids (parabens) in 18 samples. Parabens can mimic the
hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast
cancers. The preservatives are used in many cosmetics and some foods to
increase their shelf-life.

Corn-based material emits climate change gas in landfill and adds to food crisis

New cracks in Arctic ice shelf

Scientists discovered the extensive new cracks in the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf earlier this year and a patrol of Canadian Rangers got an up-close look at them last week.

“The map of Canada has changed,” said Derek Mueller of Trent University, who was amazed to find how quickly the shelf has deteriorated since he discovered the first crack in 2002.
